Ghana Reaffirms Withdrawal of Recognition of Polisario-Backed RASD

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed that the country’s decision to withdraw recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) remains in effect, rejecting reports suggesting that Accra had reversed its position.

The ministry issued the clarification through its official Facebook and X accounts following the circulation of reports by media outlets supporting the Polisario Front about a meeting between Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and an individual described as the “ambassador” of the RASD to Ghana.

Ghana’s Foreign Ministry said its decision to withdraw recognition of the RASD, announced on January 6, 2025, “remains in effect” and has not been reversed.

The ministry also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports efforts by the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy to facilitate negotiations on the basis of Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal, with the aim of reaching a “just, lasting and mutually acceptable” political solution to the dispute.

The ministry further clarified that Ablakwa received an envoy from the Polisario Front, rather than an ambassador accredited to Ghana, as reported by some separatist media outlets.

The clarification comes amid renewed diplomatic activity surrounding the Western Sahara dispute following the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council.
