Four Dead, One Missing After Flash Floods Sweep Away Car in Northern Morocco

Four people have died and a fifth person remains missing after flash floods swept away a car in northern Morocco, local authorities say.

The incident happened on Saturday near the village of Lmouawja, in the Tetouan province, after heavy rainfall caused a sudden rise in water levels along a tributary of the Oued Rmilat river. The vehicle, carrying five people, was caught by the surge on a provincial road and carried away by the current.

Emergency services, security forces and civil protection teams launched search and rescue operations shortly after the alert was raised. Divers, sniffer dogs and a drone were deployed, while local residents also joined the efforts.

Two bodies — a 14-year-old girl and a two-year-old child — were recovered late on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, rescuers found the bodies of a 12-year-old child and a man in his thirties. The search is continuing for the remaining passenger.

Authorities said a judicial investigation has been opened under the supervision of the public prosecutor to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
