The death toll from the recent migrant crisis in Ceuta has risen to 90, according to a report by Spanish radio station Cadena SER, citing official sources.
The report said Spanish authorities have recovered 74 bodies, while Moroccan authorities have recovered another 16, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 90.
The deaths follow a large-scale attempt by thousands of migrants to reach Ceuta at the end of July, one of the deadliest migration episodes recorded in Ceuta in recent years.
The unprecedented influx overwhelmed local authorities and triggered a major security response. Ceuta's mayor-president, Juan Jesús Vivas, said on Friday that approximately 60,000 people had entered the Ceuta in a single day during the peak of the crisis.
The situation also sparked unrest inside Ceuta, with riots reported in several areas, prompting Spain to reinforce security by deploying additional National Police officers, Civil Guard personnel, and military units.
The latest tragedy has renewed concerns over the humanitarian risks associated with irregular migration routes across the western Mediterranean, as authorities on both sides of the border continue recovery operations and efforts to manage the aftermath of the mass crossings.
